People walk on a cobblestone street in a quaint town with colorful half-timbered houses and a historic tower. Casual and lively atmosphere.
Exploring the charming streets of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, and having my picture taken in one of the most photographed spots in all of Germany!

I recently read an article about Europe's most charming medieval walled towns. One that I've visited immediately came to mind, and sure enough, it made the list.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany.

If you've ever dreamed of walking straight into a fairytale, this little town is where the story begins.

Rothenburg is perfectly preserved... and was nearly lost in 1945. Because of its historic importance and beauty, the U.S. Army chose not to use artillery during World War II. Instead, six soldiers were sent in, one of whom spoke fluent German. The town was spared when the local commander surrendered, defying Hitler's orders.

When I visited during a Main River cruise, I wandered the town without a map and never needed one.

In many European towns, it's easy to get turned around with all the winding, narrow cobblestone streets.

But not in Rothenburg.

The town's walls keep everything contained. If you reach the edge, you simply turn around and head in another direction.

I still remember stepping into Käthe Wohlfahrt, Germany's largest Christmas store. Imagine Santa's workshop brought to life. Every room was filled with ornaments, nutcrackers, and glowing Christmas trees.

And lunch? A toasted BLT cream cheese bagel and one of the best cappuccinos I've ever had. Simple, perfect, and enjoyed under the shade of centuries-old buildings.

Rothenburg sits just off the Main River, along Germany's Romantic Road. It's one of those places that feels made for wandering.

It's easy to picture yourself there, slowing down, soaking in the stories, and maybe picking up a Christmas ornament or two.

If Rothenburg isn't on your radar yet, it should be. There's something timeless about a town that invites you to just be. No rushing, no maps, just discovery around every corner.
