People walk on a cobblestone street in a quaint town with colorful half-timbered houses and a historic tower. Casual and lively atmosphere.
Enjoying the serene beauty of the iconic windmills at Kinderdijk, Netherlands.

Earlier this year I had the pleasure of visiting Kinderdijk in the Netherlands for the second time. And it's still one of the most peaceful places I've ever been.

The first time I went, I joined a guided tour. We learned how these 18th-century windmills still operate today, pumping water to keep the low-lying land from flooding.

I even met one of the millers who lives onsite. Yes, he actually lives onsite. We were even able to tour the home. It was like stepping into a Dutch history book.

This time around, I chose to wander on my own.

I followed the paths along the dikes and paused to simply listen. The sails of the windmills creaked softly as they turned in the breeze. I'd describe it as steady, rhythmic, and almost meditative. It's amazing how quiet the world can feel when you're surrounded by water, dikes, and sky.

There's even an option to bike if you're feeling adventurous... a leisurely ride along the canal with windmills at every turn.

That's the beauty of Kinderdijk... and of river cruising in general.

You don't have to choose between history and ease, activity and relaxation. You get to decide what kind of experience fits your day. The logistics are taken care of for you.

On my hosted Tulip Time cruise in 2027, Kinderdijk will be a memorable stop.

Whether you join a guide, take it slow, or hop on a bike, you'll feel like you've truly touched a part of the Netherlands most travelers never see.
